BG 5.14
न कर्मफलसंयोगं स्वभावस्तु प्रवर्तते ॥
na karma-phala-saṁyogaṁ svabhāvas tu pravartate
Word-for-word meanings
prabhuḥ — God; na sṛjati — does not generate; lokasya — the living being’s; kartṛtvam — sense of agency; na — nor; karmāṇi — [its] actions; na — nor; saṁyogam — [its] concordance; karma-phala — [with] the fruits of action; svabhāvaḥ tu — rather, it is the living being’s phenomenal nature; pravartate — that is effective [in this regard].
Translation
God does not generate the living being’s sense of agency, nor its actions, nor its concordance with the fruits of actions. Rather, it is the living being’s phenomenal nature that is effective in this regard*.
Notes
* The sense here is that God does not impose the notion of doership on the living beings, nor is He responsible for their actions or results. Rather, the false sense of doership arises out of ignorance of the true self. In that conditioned state, one is impelled to act due to attachment to material pleasure or to redress pain. Moreover, the results of action accrue by the law of karma.
