Reader question

How to understand the word "karṣati" here?

  1. Admin Answered

Babaji's translation is "it draws [to itself i.e. is entangled with]". Śrī Viśvanātha Cakravartī comments as follows which I translate below:

sanātano nityaḥ sa ca baddha-daśāyāṁ mana eva ṣaṣṭhaṁ yeṣāṁ tānīndriyāṇi prakṛtāv upādhau sthitāni karṣati | mamaiva etānīti svīyatvābhimānena gṛhītāṁ pādārgala-śṛṅkhalām iva karṣati ||7||

sanātana means eternal. And in the conditioned state, this [eternal jīva] becomes entangled with (karṣati) the senses situated in the upādhi (prakṛti) [of the body], of which [i.e. of which senses] the mind is the sixth. [He now explains what it means to become entangled in the senses:] [He] drags (karṣati) [the senses] like a chain bound around his foot, accepting them as his own, thinking, “These are indeed mine.”
