Word-for-word meanings

atha — thereafter;  pārthaḥ — Arjuna;  api — also;  apaśyat — saw;  sthitān — present;  tatra — there;  ubhayoḥ — in the midst of both;  senayoḥ — of the armies;  pitṝn — [his] fathers [i.e., paternal uncles];  pitāmahān — grandfathers;  ācāryān — teachers;  mātulān — maternal uncles;  bhrātṝn — brothers [and cousins];  putrān — sons [and nephews];  pautrān — grandsons [and grandnephews];  sakhīn — friends;  tathā — and;  śvaśurān — fathers-in-law;  ca eva — and indeed;  suhṛdaḥ — well-wishers.

Translation

Thereafter, Arjuna also saw present there in the midst of both the armies his paternal uncles*, grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers and cousins, sons and nephews, grandsons and grandnephews, friends, fathers-in-law, and well-wishers.

Notes

* Since Arjuna’s own father had passed away long before the battle of Kurukṣetra, the plural pitṝn, “fathers,” here refers to paternal uncles, which in Indian family relations would be taken as nearly equivalent to the birth father. The same criterion applies to the translation of pitṝn in verses 1.33–34.
