The Path of Awareness of God’s Immanence
There are forty-two verses in this chapter, seven spoken by Arjuna and thirty-five by Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Śrī Kṛṣṇa concluded Chapter 9 by advocating exclusive surrender to Him. He was, however, not yet satisfied with what He had already disclosed about Himself in Chapter 9. As the devotee longs to know the glories of God in detail, so too God is eager to speak confidentially to His loving devotee, Arjuna. So by His grace, without any inquiry from Arjuna, He begins to explain the process of meditation on the Absolute as immanent within the world.
Kṛṣṇa’s heart melts for His devotee, and it is for this reason that He describes His majesty (2–6). The next four verses disclose the heart of Bhagavad Gītā, meaning its essence in the form of pure bhakti-yoga (8–11). Arjuna becomes overwhelmed when he hears of Bhagavān’s compassion for His devotees and praises Śrī Kṛṣṇa. He asks Kṛṣṇa to tell him in detail of His divine yogic power and His glories. He desires to hear about Kṛṣṇa’s majesty in detail so that he can meditate upon Him while pursuing his worldly duties (12–18).
The remainder of the chapter offers a detailed description of Kṛṣṇa’s immanence within this world in the form of His majesty (19–39). Kṛṣṇa concludes that there is no end to His opulences, the whole world being but a manifestation of just a fragment of Him: “And whatever is the genesis of all living beings, O Arjuna, that also I am. Therefore, there is no such being, movable or immovable, that can exist without Me. There is no end to My divine opulences, O tormentor of the enemies. This elaboration of My opulences is but a summary description, spoken by Me” (39–40). Having described His most prominent glories, Kṛṣṇa concludes by stating that the entire cosmos is but a manifestation of a single fraction of His power (42).
